Islamic Texts Markup Language

March 1, 2007

The texts I work with combine mostly English text with the following elements which usually need special formatting: Qur’anic ayat, ahadith, Arabic text, Persian text, Urdu text, Urdu-like (Panjabi, Sindhi, etc.) text, and poety in all of the above. I keep imagining a straightforward markup format to handle all of this. It needs to be somewhat futureproof and foolproof. It needs to be easily transformable to PostScript, pdf, and html – at least. I’ve tried just about every format and numerous applications for and ways of dealing with each, but there’s never really been anything I was satisfied with enough to stick with. Is it worth it?
