Language Log vs. Lifehacker

March 14, 2007

When I first saw the Lifehacker -ly elimination script, the first thing I did was scour the archives of Strunk&White-hatred at Language Log for a relevant post I could link to in LH’s comments. I guess the LL logs most have been overflowing with people searching for ‘ly’ ‘adverbs’ ‘strunk’ and the like, because they’ve written an excessively caustic reply.
Not that Strunk & White don’t merit the bile, but the LH post was at least better than the typical rabid Elements-waving, claiming only that excessive adverb use is less-than-optimal style.
